Places that I have lived. Part of my travel routes.
As you might see from the map, I have been fortunate enough to travel
quite extensively around the world. On this page I will give a short
summary of when and where I have been traveling. I will however
not get into describing each place or what I have experienced while
traveling.
Born in Hammerfest, in the very north of Norway. My first travel
was to Raufoss, where I grew up. When I was 3 years old, I moved
to Zambia where I lived for a year and a half as my parents worked
there. Except for this, and some traveling with my family, my
firs trip was to Chesley, Canada, where I was an exchange student.
While in Canada I got the chance to travel extensively with my
host family. I traveled around in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Scatswan,
Alberta as well as to about 10 states in the northern part of
the US.
When I got back to Norway again, the only traveling that I did
for the next three years, was a package tour to the Canary Islands.
This was just a party trip, and not really traveling in my sense
of the word.
The next serious traveling was however my most extensive backpacking
trip so far. In September 1986 a friend of mine and I went to
New York, where we purchased a Van. We drove around the US for
more than three months with this Van before we sold it in San
Diego. We then took buses down to Mexico where we stayed for another
month. I then continued down through Central America, down the
Amazon river and around in South America on my own. I worked my
way home again by signing up on a Norwegian container ship, going
from Santos, Brazil and back to Europe. The whole trip lasted
for about 9 months.
A year later I went on a two-month trip to Asia. I flew to Thailand
and then to Hong Kong, took a train through China to Beijing and
the Trans Sibirian Railroad from Beijing through Moscow and to
Berlin before I went home.
The following summer I went on a months train trip around Europe.
Went through Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey.
The summer after I went to Spain and Portugal for a month. And
a few months after this I went to South Africa for a month.
The following Summer I went on a three-month trip through the
Philippines, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand.
A year later I went to California for two years to study. While
there I also traveled around in that region, including Hawaii,
and Mexico. I also spent two months in Japan during the summer
between the first and second year of my MBA program.
When I got back to Norway again it took me 6 months before I
moved out again. This time I moved to Beijing where I worked as
a trainee for the Norwegian Trade Council at the Norwegian Embassy
in Beijing. While working in Beijing I got a chance to travel
extensively round in China as well as to a few other countries
in the region, including Thailand, Vietnam, Macao, Hong Kong,
Mongolia and North Korea. On my way home I went hiking in Nepal
and spent a few weeks in India.
It was not until I started to work for Ericsson, after my return
from China, that I started to get paid to travel. I had some job
related trips to places around in Europe as well as to Australia
and Thailand. During this time I also had a weeks vacation to
both France and Switzerland.
After a year and a half with Ericsson in Norway, I moved to Malaysia.
During the 18 months that I was living in Malaysia I spent about
6 months in China, the US and in Indonesia as part of my job.
I also spent about 2 months traveling to Indonesia, Cambodia and
Thailand. I also went to Africa for a few weeks to climb mount
Kilimanjaro and to go on a safari. The African trip included Tanzania
and Kenya.
When I returned from Malaysia I continued to work for Ericsson,
but this time in Sweden. I was expected to work a lot in Asia
in this position, but after 5 months, the only travel I had been
able to do was to Australia and Denmark, in addition to a couple
of weeks of vacation in Thailand, Malaysia and China. As this
job turned out to be too much of an ^office job ̄, I decided to
leave Ericsson and go on to the longest and most adventurous journey
of my life. I bought a sailboat with a friend and plan to just
travel around without any major goal or purpose for as long as
I feel like it. The first trip will be from Athens to Thailand,
through the Red Sea, The Maldives and The Andaman Islands. After
this, we plan to just cruse around South East Asia.
